I'm sure someone on my friends list must speak German. Could you give me a rough translation of this e-mail I just received from someone on my course?

The subject line was "Bist du Deutsche? Kannst du luegen?"

Liebe potentielle Teilnehmer/innen,

Thanks!

Are you German? Can you lie?

I will be doing a linguistics project, wherefore I need your help. Can you write two paragraphs in German, not more than 150-200 words. One paragraph should describe the last Job you had, and the other paragraph should describe a fictitious job (as though you had done this job). In other words, for the second paragraph, you must lie. Next to each paragraph, write "Real Job" or "Fictitous Job" (so that I know). Both paragraphs should have the following points:

1) Description of the daily schedule
2) Description of typical duties
3) Your feelings about it

The paragraphs should be as realistics as possible. You must try to convince a jury that the paragraphs (are believable? not sure about that)

The most believable fictitious paragraph will win a prize. You must only spent about ten minutes on it.

I would be very happy if you can pass this on, I need many paragraphs! I thank you much in advance!

That is a rough, quickie translation, sans dictionary. I could do a better one later.

Don't worry, I've got the gist. I thought it would be something like that, but I just wanted to make sure I couldn't help. Thanks, all of you!

There you go...

Dear potential participant,

I am currently working on a linguistics-project with which I need your help. Could you write two statements in German each not more than 150-200 words. One statement should describe the job you did last and the other one a fictional job (as if you had done that job). In other words: You have to lie during the second statement. Write next to each statement "real job" or "fictional job" (so that I can distinguish them)

Both statements should include the following:
1) description of your daily schedule
2) description of typical tasks
3) your opinion about it.

Your statements should sound as real as possible. You have to try and convince a jury that judges your statements according to their credibility. The person who writes the most realistic fictional statement will win a present.

You just have to occupy yourself with it for 10 minutes...
I'd be happy if you could forward this task, I need lots of statements urgently. Thanks in advance.

And Babel Fish automatically translates it thus:

"are you German? Can you lie?"

Loves potential participant/inside,

I make a straight Projeckt for linguistics, whereby I need your assistance. You can write two statements on German, in each case no more than 150-200 words. A statement is the last job, which you made describe and which is to describe other statement a fictitious job (so as if you would have this job made). Into other words you must lie with the second statement. Apart from each statement write "genuine job" or "fictitious job" (so that I know it).

Both statements are to contain the following points:
1) to description of the routine of the day
2) description of typical tasks of
3) your opinions over it the statements are to sound as reliable as possible.

You must try a jury convince, which the statements will judge on the basis their reliability. The or that, which writes the most reliable fictitious statement, will win a gift.

You must be occupied only ten minutes with it... I would be pleased, if you could lead the task further, I need actually completely many statement urgently!!

I thank you times in advance!

"Loves potential participant/inside,"

:D

"straight Projeckt"

is that the opposite of a gay project?

These translators are just hilarious sometimes.

Eilan, also German, but too late to help
