Dean tries to forget sometimes. On the worst days, that forgetting is helped with whatever drink he can find. Sometimes, it even works.
But never for long. The memories always come back.
He remembers a red-haired boy and a bushy-haired girl, who were among the first to go. And he remembers that the reason for that was nothing more than the company they kept.
He remembers a clumsy boy, with no great magical talent. And he remembers that that boy fought more fiercely than anyone before his curtain fell.
He remembers a fair-haired aristocrat, who he never called a friend. And he remembers that several good people owe their lives to that boy's death.
He remembers a boy with messy dark hair and green eyes. And he remembers that that boy tried with all he had to save his friends, and gave it all in the end.
Most clearly of all, he remembers a boy with sandy hair. And he remembers that that boy loved him, and was loved in return. He remembers how that boy proved his love, and why Dean could never prove his own.
Dean is the last survivor of his year at Hogwarts.
And try as he may, he will always remember.
Please comment.
