I am not quite sure what to make of the fact that I've seen more mentions by far on my flist of the gay rights meme - both passing it on and criticising it - than of the murder of five young Amish girls in Pennsylvania, with several more girls still in intensive care.

Just sayin'.

ETA: I wasn't saying the one being mentioned a lot was why the other isn't, at all. I'm aware that they're unrelated issues. I could just as easily have said "the fact that I've seen almost no mention of the murder..." and maybe I should have.

And I'm not trying to condemn anyone. Just wondering, because I genuinely didn't understand why the second had barely been mentioned at all. And people have explained their viewpoints on it, so now I understand better.

I've been trying to avoid that - I've got nothing to say, and no words to describe how utterly digusted I feel about the Amish shooting.

I don't see why. The gay meme originated on and is LJ-based, of course it's going to get mentioned more on LJ than a tragic event that's getting widespread coverage in the mass media.

Well, other tragic events get talked about a lot, at least on the day they happened.

I don't think they're connected, really. And the thing is, people [usually] know how they feel about one, whereas it's hard to wrap your mind around the other, let alone put it in words. Me, it took place just miles from where I grew up, so I'm having some issues processing it. Not that I posted on either of them.

Oh, I wasn't saying the one being mentioned a lot was why the other isn't.

*nods* gotcha. It came off a little like that, at least to me. But even without the one or the other, I think a lot of that still stands -- I mean, what do you say, other than it's so horrible for the people involved?

Badly phrased, I guess. *edits quickly*

And... yeah. I wasn't really condemning. Just... wondering.

I'd guess it's because one is controversial whereas the other isn't. I'd imagine there's a pretty broad consensus that killing children, execution-style is completely heinous and sickening, so it's probably not commented on much, it's just taken as read. There isn't the same consensus on gay-rights, so I'd imagine that's why it garners more discussion.

Over here it's a function of general numbness. I don't think I've commented on any of it yet, but that's coming.

The Bailey shooting was what, five days before the Amish school shooting? I want to bap people on the head and explain to them that this is not how it should be.

Also, I suspect it's easier to respond to a meme in one way or another because it's more immediate in cyberspace, and is something that is able to be directly participated in/interacted with, whereas the school shooting just yields a feeling of helplessness.

There've been.. three school shootings, now? One in Wisconsin, and two elsewhere that were far greater in magnitude, and mostly targeted against girls. I think all of three people have mentioned any of them (of course, I haven't, either, so I really can't talk).

People were more up in arms about the new bill that passed in Congress.

I haven't mentioned the meme OR current events because I'm too busy HIDING FROM THE UNIVERSE. *cling*

So yeah. Kind of overwhelmed by how unbelievably shitty the world is lately. O_o

...okay, I've now googled the Amish murders and...holy god.

Um, I hadn't heard of either the meme or the apparent rash of shootings recently. I only read tech news.

I think I feel a little more ill.

I posted my RARGH because I saw the meme too many times whilst not properly awake.

I did not know about the murder of the Amish girls because I do not watch TV or listen to the radio, and have not bought a newspaper today as I am short on cash, and this is the first I knew of it. o.O
