Merry and Pippin had never liked being separated, even for a day. They had never imagined how much worse it would be when neither knew if the other even still lived.
So neither would have blamed the other, had they known that both were taking comfort in the princes of their respective new realms.
When Eomer came to Merry, and Faramir to Pippin, and spoke of their own griefs and fears, the hobbits, weary with their separation, could think of only one comfort to give, and also to take.
And each reached up to kiss the man who would be his liege.
