I've started using AIM through Gmail rather than through Trillian, and it seems to have a few... quirks, namely not popping up windows to tell me when people IM me. Now I know it's happening, I'll be checking my list of recorded chats more regularly, but if I'm slow to respond to your first ping, that's why.
