Ulfin hated Belasius. He made no secret of it, and though he had never spoken with Merlin on the matter, he was sure the older boy knew exactly how he felt - Merlin was extremely perceptive, and he often looked at Ulfin with sympathy when nobody was looking.
However, even Merlin could never learn what Ulfin had done. Hating Belasius with everything he had, he had wished with all his being that his master would - just - die!
Less than a week later, the old man was dead.
And nobody would ever convince Ulfin that he was not responsible

Date: 2003-07-03 02:20 pm (UTC)They're sitting together by their campfire, and Merlin looks at Ulfin and thinks about how they've known each other since they were kids, and Ulfin has this kind of resignation that comes from knowing he'll spend his life alone or with other men, because of what Belasius did to him.
Ulfin is very possibly gay, and definitely fictional, but I fell head over heels in love with him the second I read that passage. One day, I'll write that fic that's lurking in the back of my head, about retelling the books from his POV...
